Dietary sources harbour many secrets to longevity, many of which could help tackle age-related disorders. Ongoing research is helping scientists determine what constitutes the optimal longevity diet. There is overwhelming evidence that berries, thanks to their antioxidants, have a favourably impact on lifespan. one berry, in particular, known as Juniper berry, may have a significant boosting effect on longevity.
According to The RxList: “Juniper is a short to medium height tree that grows wild in some parts of Europe, North America and Asia.
“People use the Juniper berry to make medicine. Medicinal preparations include the extract of Juniper berry, as well as the essential oil of Juniper berry.
“Don’t confuse Juniper berry oil with cade oil, which is distilled from Juniper wood.”
The plant has traditionally been used as a diuretic, anti-arthritis, anti-diabetes and antiseptic properties.
In other words, it increases the need to urinate and helps fight bacteria and viruses.
In fact, Juniper berry has a long history of usage to treat:
- Sore throat
- Respiratory infections
- Muscle aches
Many of these benefits are attributable to the volatile oils in the berry, containing chemicals known as monoterpenes, which provide anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
A report in Science Direct adds that “it also helps in soothing skin flair-ups, boosts the immune system and helps insomnia and digestion activities”.
The report also cites research on worms which found the plant may also have a role to play in extending the lifespan.
Writing in Science Direct, the researchers wrote: “Juniperus Communis L. is an evergreen shrub, with immense medical and therapeutic potentials.
“The present investigation reveals insight and exploration of JBEO of its marvellous potentials against ageing and ROS detoxification […].
“The lower dose of JBEO was effective and enhanced the lifespan of C.Elegans (worms) by 18.54 percent.
“Similarly the JBEO treated worms showed 30.4 percent more survival under thermal stress.”
Like other berries, Juniper is high in vitamin C and flavonoid antioxidants, which confer protection against various damaging pathogens.
Antioxidant-rich foods are important for health because they protect the body’s cells against damage from oxidative stress.
This is important, as oxidative stress is one of the major causes of ageing, which the body accumulates through unhealthy habits like smoking, alcohol consumption and a bad diet.
Fortunately, many of these damaging effects can be countered by adhering to a healthy diet rich in antioxidants.
Separate research published in the journal of Ethnopharmacology has shown juniper berry extract can significantly lower levels of bad cholesterol while elevating good cholesterol.
The findings specifically determine that an aqueous extract has potential lipid-lowering effects on the body, suggesting it may also protect the heart.
These findings highlight the value of conducting more research on the therapeutic potential of Juniper to treat other age-related diseases.
